Computer Methods in Structural Analysis: Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Series

The text which introduces computer science into the structural analysis field, presents simple and complex structural design problems. The matrix-force and matrix-displacement or stiffness methods of anlaysis, are developed from the fundamental principles of equilibrium and compatibility. Virtual work principles are utilized, but energy formulations are not. The idea of influence coefficient matrices are used in the initial formulations of both methods. Complete worked examples are presented at each developmental stage. Fortran programs used for the solutions are also presented. Eight of the eleven Fortran programs are designed for batch processing and the remainder are conversational. In the development of the programs, brevity and simplicity was regarded as more essential than commercial efficiency. The book contains a large number of textual impregnated line diagrams and numerical arrays which help the presentation of problem solutions. They consist of three sections: (1) The Matrix-Force Method (chapters: Introduction to Influence Coefficient Matrices for Rigid Plane Frames). (2) The Matrix-Displacement Method (chapters: Rigid-Frame Analysis for Multiple Load Sets and Initial Strains; Influence Coefficient Matrices for Plane Trusses; Automatic Analysis of Rigidly Pointed Plane Frameworks; Direct Construction of the Frame-Stiffness Matrix; Analysis of Rigid Space Frameworks). (3) Elastic-Plastic and Second Order Analysis (chapters: Automatic Elastic-Plastic Analysis of Plane Frameworks; Plastic Analysis and Design Using Time-Sharing, Interactive Computing Methods; Non-Linear Structural Analysis Using Time-Sharing, Interactive Computer Methods).
